Exciting News at GoldenHaven!!!

We are pleased to present our newest addition to the family 

Indie May!!

She is a BEAUTIFUL American Golden from Champion lines. She will be small like Pollie, approximately 50lbs.

Indie is such a sweetheart and a very smart puppy. She loves the snow and thinks that Pollie is her mommy.

It has been a blast to watch Indie play with our current litter of Goldendoodles as if they were her own sibling, I definitely think they have helped ease her transition to her new home.

Here are some pictures of our sweet girl, she will be ready to breed Summer 2018 and so for now we will enjoy raising her to love walks, kids and tennis balls.

Goldendoodles: What size to expect.

Goldendoodles are one of those breeds that can come in many different sizes and colors. It can be confusing to know which is the right size for you and to understand why it is they can be so different if they all are the "same"... I'll do my best to explain.

As I have explained before
Golden Retriever + Poodle =  Goldendoodle 

Golden retrievers can come two ways: American Standard (this is what my Goldens are) and English Creme. 

Americans are varying shades of gold to red, smaller and a little leaner with slightly longer noses.

Cremes are almost white, large with big blocky heads.

These breeds can run from 50-100lbs.

Poodles can come anywhere from 8-10lb to nearly 100lb. They can be white, black, brown, red, silver... you name it.

When you breed two varied breeds you can expect a lot of variation with what can be considered a "Goldendoodle" BUT you need to remember that an F1 Goldendoodle is the cross between a Golden Retriever (50-100lb) and a Poodle so really the smallest you will get a true, first generation Goldendoodle is in the 25-30lb range.

If you want something smaller and you are looking at an F1b you need to remember that while you may be able to get a smaller dog (15lb) by breeding an F1 with a 10lb poodle, it will also be 75% poodle.

Goldendoodle + Poodle = 25% Golden Retriever and 75% Poodle. While they are undoubtably cute they are also lacking in the teddy bear characteristics you may be looking for when you think "Goldendoodle".

Potty Training Update (and some helpful tips with the transition)

We have been working consistently with these puppies on potty training using the kennel method.

We have reduced their space in their cage to allow for less room from their sleeping/eating area for them to make a mess. This teaches them to hold their potty until they are allowed outside.

As soon as we take the puppies out of the kennel we go outside and the puppies all go potty immediately. They have learned that that is the place for them to go potty and have even started whining at the door when they are playing inside.

Of course the puppies are still very small and need frequent bathroom breaks, also some level of regression is expected when going to a new home, however, if you are able to use a consistent schedule of allowing them to eat and drink and taking them out to potty 5-25 minutes afterward I feel confident they will respond well and be completely kennel trained in no time.

One tip, when using a kennel for a puppy your options are to A. use a smaller kennel to begin with transitioning to a medium sized one once the puppy grows or B. buy a medium kennel to begin with and partition off a small portion. You don't want much more room than for the puppy to be able to comfortably turn around in.

Shedding and Allergies with Goldendoodles

This is a hot topic when it comes to selling Goldendoodles, everyone wants to know

A. Do Goldendoodles Shed?

and

B. If I am allergic to dogs, can I still get a Goldendoodle?

The short answer is

A. Probably no and and if so, VERY LITTLE.

and

B. Maybe.


If these answers don't satisfy you, read on...

 Poodles have a different kind of coat than most dogs. It is not oily and does not shed like, say, a lab. While these are still dogs most people with dog allergies do not have problems being around a poodle in the same way they would a lab and while there may still be a small reaction generally speaking it would have to be brought on by direct contact like rubbing your eyes after petting the dog, IF AT ALL. Many people simply coexist happily without any reactions at all.

Goldendoodles are a cross between a more traditional dog and a poodle and therefore the instance of allergies and shedding are greatly reduced, if not eliminated. You will find that F1 Goldendoodles have very soft fur instead of the constantly shedding, course fur found on labs. Will you have a reaction to a Goldendoodle? It would absolutely depend on the severity of your own allergy and you would need to determine for yourself if this would be a good situation for you and your family.

I hope this answers your questions, please keep in mind no reputable breeder can guarantee zero allergies.

F1 vs F1b Goldendoodles

So what is the difference between first generation Goldendoodles and second gen?

F1 Goldendoodles, or First Generation, are puppies that come from a purebred Poodle and purebred Golden Retriever. They are Hypo-Allergenic but still retain the wider head and teddy bear characteristics of the Golden Retriever.

F1b Goldendoodles are a cross breed of an F1 Goldendoodle and a Poodle. This additional cross with a poodle makes the puppies' fur more curly than wavy but also reduces the level of fur to make them all but impossible to be allergic to. Their heads tend to be more long and slim, like the Poodle, than the traditional wider Goldendoodle look.

These puppies have been so much fun and completely worth the work we have to put into it! Here's a little update on their progress...

• They have had their first deworming treatment.
• Microchips have been ordered!
• We have begun socializing the pups now that they are old enough!
• Weaning has begun and the pups are more and more interested in their puppy food!

And just look how cute they are!!!!

It's hard to believe that only a week ago the puppies hadn't opened their eyes yet and now they are acting like REAL puppies! They are trying to wrestle and bark and climb out of their bed, it is so much fun to watch!

These pups are going FAST! I have had three reserved in the last week and we only have two left!

The Black Boy is one of the bigger pups, very playful and red but he is a great snuggler and super patient with my kiddos.

The Red Boy is more medium sized and a little more quiet and also a great snuggler!
